Tips on effective information/networking meetings
Here are some tips on how to conduct an effective job networking meeting:- If you are networking with someone you do not know, you may send a letter or e-mail in advance, stating your objectives and the person who referred you.
- Be prepared to ask questions and take notes on the answers.
- Upon meeting the person, reiterate your reason for meeting to eliminate any confusion and to reassure them that you are not there asking them for a job.
- Allow the person to speak about themselves before jumping into detailed industry or company questions.
- Do not go over a specified time limit. If you asked them for 45 minutes, keep the meeting to 45 minutes. Not only does it show consideration for the other person's time but it can always be extended if the contact is free and is willing to give you more time.
- You may be asked for a resume during this meeting. There are two ways to handle this situation. You could take this to mean that your contact is interested in your skills and experience and may want to consider you for a job. On the other hand, you can say that your purpose was to meet and gather information and that you can send them a copy of the resume as soon as possible.
- You must end the meeting with proper eiquette and scripting. Always thank your contact for taking some time for you from their schedule. Ask if they might recommend someone else that could provide additional advice and guidance. When other contacts are suggested, ask if it would be appropriate to use them as a reference.
- Always send a personal thank you letter or email immediately after the meeting. It allows you to maintain contact with the person and show your gratitude.
